Album Notes
The split of Billie Davis' 1960s recordings between three different labels seems to have made it impossible to compile a truly definitive retrospective of her work, which would take two CDs if it were to be complete. Should you want everything she recorded between her two separate stints with Decca Records, however, this compilation is exemplary, even if its omission of that Decca material (which included all three of her British chart hits) means that this shouldn't be mistaken for a best-of. All of her 1963-1966 singles for Columbia and Piccadilly (including her duets as half of Keith & Billie) are on this 28-track anthology, along with five previously unreleased 1963 cuts (two studio outtakes and three live performances).

Notes:

This is a superb collection comprised of Billie Davis' singles for England's Decca Records, most of them dating between 1967 and 1970 (with four tracks from her 1963 stint with the label), and augmented with a handful of tracks from her self-titled 1970 album. It's all superb girl group-style pop, with a distinctly American, soulful edge and even an occasional psychedelic intrusion, highlighted by her spirited rendition of "I Want You to Be My Baby" and her impassioned version of "Wasn't It You," among other tracks. There's not a loser in the bunch and, in fact, the songs all show an amazing consistency despite origins as different as Joe Cocker, Carole King, Ian Anderson (yes, she covered "Living in the Past"), and Neil Diamond. Strangely enough, the appending of the four early Decca sides at the end of the CD is sort of jarring, throwing listeners back to an earlier (though still eminently enjoyable) era of British pop/rock. The sound is excellent throughout and the CD comes with an excellent career overview on Davis.

This follow-up to Ace's recent Love Hit Me! Decca Beat Girls and Scratch My Back! Pye Beat Girls releases comprises superior 60s she-pop from the EMI group of record labels Parlophone, Columbia and HMV headquartered in Marylebone in the heart of London's West End. The collection is available in 12-track LP and 24-track CD formats. The CD version comes with a bumper booklet featuring expanded notes and extra photos. Most of the female acts signed by EMI were teenagers completely tuned in to the current pop trends. Scottish duo the McKinleys, R&B club habituée Julie Driscoll (cover star of the vinyl version), talent show winner Billie Davis (the CD cover girl) and Midlands pub singer Beverley Jones took original material from London's Tin Pan Alley and American covers and gave them an abrasive, vigorous kick that made for fabulous 45s. They may not have had quite the polish of their US counterparts, but the rough n ready sound of the Marylebone Beat Girl was precisely her appeal. Among the many highlights are Dancing Yet, a Dobie Gray-style discotheque number by Liza & the Jet Set; Like The Big Man Said by Toni Daly, a cover of Italian star Caterina Caselli's L'uomo D'oro with edgy English lyrics by Peter Callander; and Billie Davis' groovy gender-switched update of Chuck Willis' R&B nugget Whatcha Gonna Do. Compilation and notes by Ace Records in-house girl-pop buffs Mick Patrick and Sheila Burgel.
